Call for Papers

Deadline: May 15th, 2004

Participants are invited to submit abstracts for oral or poster presentations and symposia sessions until May 15th, 2004.

If you intend to submit a talk or poster abstract (250 words maximum) or a session/symposium proposal, please see the submission details below and then use the internet abstract form. There you will also be able to indicate if you wish to be considered for a competition prize (see below).

Abstracts submitted by fax, mail or e-mail are not accepted. No figures, tables, or graphic art are allowed in abstracts.

Note: you may submit only one abstract for which you are the first author.

If you have serious problems to get your abstract submitted this way, please contact Mrs Wencke Wieseke from CTW.

All submissions will be evaluated by the program committee:
- Peter M. Todd / Max Planck Institute for Human Development, Berlin (chair)
- Edward H. Hagen / Institute for Theoretical Biology, Humboldt University, Berlin
- Nicole C. Hess / Institute for Theoretical Biology, Humboldt University, Berlin
- Edouard Machery / Universite' de Paris-Sorbonne
- Masanori Takezawa / Hokkaido University, Sapporo, Japan
- Andreas Wilke / Max Planck Institute for Human Development, Berlin

Presentation Options:
Oral presentations will be 15 minutes long, with five additional minutes for questions. Posters will be displayed for an extended period during the conference, and will be presented in person by authors in three designated sessions. On the internet abstract form, please check off whether you are interested in giving an oral presentation, a poster, or either as space/time allows.(If you only select "oral presentation" this could lead to your submission not being accepted.) You will receive notification before the meeting about whether you will be presenting orally or as a poster. Posters need to fit within an area 1350 mm high and 900 mm wide.

Symposium/Session Organization:
Presentations will be organized into sessions on similar topics. If you would like to organize a symposium session or panel on a specific topic, please first contact your set of prospective presenters as soon as possible to get their agreement and talk titles, and then sign up using the internet abstract form (be sure to check the box indicating that this is a symposium proposal). Such sessions should consist of four to six talks (including discussants) on a particular topic, and the organizer should prepare a short summary of the session (300 words or less) to be entered on the internet abstract form, along with the list of speakers and their talk titles. Each speaker should also individually submit their talk abstract (indicating that it is an oral presentation proposal) and personal info on the internet abstract form (as well as register).

Competitions:
All poster presentations are automatically entered into a competition for a $500 award for the best poster.

There are also two competitions for young scholars that are judged on the basis of complete papers:
1.
New Young Investigator Award: To be eligible, you must have not yet received your Ph.D. or other postgraduate degree, or have received it during 2004.

2. Postdoctoral Research Award: To be eligible, you must have completed your Ph.D. or other postgraduate degree within the past five years (i.e. 1999, 2000, 2001, 2002, 2003).

In addition, to be eligible for either of these awards you must never have won that competition before and you must be the sole author of your paper. All papers accepted for these competitions will be presented orally. Both of these prizes come with a cash award of $500. If you would like to be considered for either of these awards, check off the appropriate box at the bottom of the abstract submission form and send a single-spaced PDF file of your paper for consideration, of no more than 5,000 words length, to hbes_program@mpib-berlin.mpg.de by May 15th, 2004.
